Biker Patch

Motorcycle riders are, in a sense, both individualists and group members at the same time. Bikers celebrate the freedom of the open road in their riding, and in some ways, the rejection of a conventional (i.e., car-dependent) lifestyle. Yet at the same time, bikers of all stripes declare their identity and solidarity with fellow riders through the use of custom biker patches.

There's nothing new about biker custom embroidered patches. They've long been a part of the world of motorcycles, almost as common as leather clothing. There's a patch to express just about any viewpoint, show solidarity with virtually any cause.

The biker patch that most people link to motorcycles is the classic three-piece patch worn on the back of a rider's jacket or vest. The three-piece biker patch has traditionally been worn by riders who are members of so-called "outlaw" biker clubs, those not sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association. "Outlaw," in this usage, refers only to the lack of AMA approval.

The three-piece biker patch features a large center piece displaying a club-specific design. The center is flanked by top and bottom rockers. The top one indicates the name of the club, and the bottom on shows the state or city in which the club is based.

To win the three-piece biker patches, members have to earn them. This usually requires an apprenticeship and initiation process that can take years before a rider is fully accepted. Once identified as a "full patch" member, the wearer can wear the patch, or "colors" for life.

Riders' clubs sponsored by motorcycle manufacturers don't have any specific membership requirements beyond owning the bike in question. These groups, such as Harley-Davidson's Harley Owners Group (HOG), don't require any type of initiation or apprenticeship. Members of these groups typically wear one-piece biker patches instead of the three-piece biker patches worn by the "outlaw" clubs.

Some rider groups cater to specific membership, and the biker patches they wear reflect their members. Law enforcement rider clubs, biker ministries, veterans' riding groups and others all have their own specific biker patches.

Many riders choose to wear small biker patches in addition to the larger back patch. These may include political or humorous statements, memorial biker patches to commemorate fallen friends or flag patches. Some choose to wear a biker patch to commemorate a particularly memorable road trip or event such as Daytona Beach Bike Week or the annual Sturgis Rally.
